I came across Mike Langram’s Ski Injury website recently, a great resource (and heavily evidence-based) about Mike’s experience of treating injuries from snowsports.
Mike is a GP in Aviemore and a ski patrol doctor in the Cairngorms. His website has gone from strength to strength since 1999, and now holds a vast range of resources – from advice to skiers, to papers on management of common injuries and helping medical students to find suitable elective experience. He’s a strong advocate for wrist-protectors for snowboarders, and ensuring that children have the right safety equipment too.
He also has a collection of videos from the internet, showing common causes of ski accidents. Whilst the videos are sobering to watch, they do serve an important function. I was amazed to view what it’s like to be caught up in an avalanche – as the video below shows. Remarkable stuff. You can read comments of the experience here.
The website is easy to use and I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in emergency medicine and sports-related injuries.
