A vacancy for a full-time partner will arise at Barra Medical Practice in April 2015. We are keen to find someone who would want to settle on the island, and who is able to combine excellent clinical standards with traditional patient-centred values. This is a challenging but very rewarding job, and we are willing to wait for the right person.
We are a two doctor dispensing practice serving a population of 1200 on the linked islands of Barra and Vatersay. The Practice is based at Clach Mhile Surgery in Castlebay.
The Practice also provides medical cover for St Brendan’s, the 5-bedded Community Hospital in Castlebay. Duties include acute admission of patients with subsequent inpatient care or onward transfer to the mainland, along with A/E duties. There is also a commitment to the training and Continuous Professional Development of the nursing staff. Plans for a new hospital and GP surgery adjacent to the current St Brendan’s Hospital are at an advanced stage, and the building is expected to be completed within the next two years.
We cover OOH with our own on-call rota –currently one week on/one week off, with time off in lieu. The practice is also on call for local Police work.
Barra and Vatersay are beautiful islands with a strong community ethos. There are ample opportunities to become involved in island life, for example through cultural and sporting activities, community and voluntary groups and the local Catholic and Church of Scotland churches. Gaelic is widely spoken and there is a rich musical heritage. Nursery, Primary and Secondary schooling is available on the island. Barra can be reached by a five hour ferry crossing from Oban or an hour’s flight from Glasgow.
