Tired of the NHS and looking for another career option? Private practice in Alderney, the third largest island in the Channel Islands, is an exciting alternative with good earning potential.  We are looking for another GP or a couple to share the workload as the practice is experiencing increased demand for expanded services.

GPs working on the island must have the entitlement to register as a GP in the UK.  This requires MRCGP or recognised GP Training.

Alderney is situated close to Normandy and is both outside the UK and the EU. All GP services are run privately and are entirely outside the NHS. There is a morning surgery which runs from 8-12, very well spaced consultations with open access for emergencies, and then a similar short evening session from 4.30-6pm. We tend to follow up patients rather than immediately referring them to Consultants in Guernsey.  Evening and night calls are rare and usually fairly serious.  Emergencies can be admitted to the island’s cottage hospital or sent to Guernsey by aeroplane or lifeboat.

Essentially, there is a family atmosphere on this small island as we know the patients well, having built up a strong but workable relationship with the local community.  There is an excellent work/ life balance.  Daily life is relaxed and, despite being on call overnight, the workload is not onerous. We take on a good deal of clinical responsibility which is both varied and stimulating and undertake minor procedures in line with experience and competence.  Opportunities to expand personal professional interests abound.  Management of patients requires the confidence to know when to make a hurried transfer to Guernsey or when patients can be safely managed on Alderney.

The cottage hospital is newly built and is “state of the art”. There is an X-ray department with digital transfer for consultant opinion from Guernsey, and regular out-patient clinics run by the Guernsey Consultants and physiotherapists. There are close links with the Consultants in Guernsey at any time of the day or night.

The practice owns a large three storey modern premises with three consulting rooms. The top floor consists of a self contained comfortable two bedroom doctor’s flat which could be extended.

We suggest you have a look at the Alderney website which gives a comprehensive overview of island life:
