Rural Doctors’ Conference: Gregynog 2009

Rural Doctors' Conference

This year’s Annual Rural Doctors’ Conference, with the Montgomeryshire Medical Society and the Institute of Rural Health, will be held on 30th September to 2nd October.

The location is Newtown, in Powys, Wales (see Google Maps).  It promises to be a stimulating event, and set in the Gregynog Estate there is likely to be much inspiration for debate and ideas.  The programme spans a range of specialties, and topics such as revalidation and the RCGP Rural Forum feature too.  Content is aimed at GPs, Practice Nurses and Managers.

For more details – have a look at the PDF flyer here. Look out for the benefits of introducing a friend/colleague!  Reduced rates are available for trainees.

Rural WONCA Conference – happening now

woncaHundreds of rural practitioners from all over the world are gathering today in Heraklion, Crete for the 9th WONCA Rural Health Conference.

There’s a focus on four key themes – health inequalities, technology, island medicine and health services for immigrants.  The full programme is available from the conference website, and we are hoping that some of the presentations might be available for later viewing, by those who couldn’t make it to sunny Crete.

One of our own editors (& chair of the RCGP Rural Forum) – Dr Malcolm Ward – is attending, and will be running a workshop to share experiences in developing better networking for rural GPs.  There’s a healthy contingent of expertise attending from other parts of the UK too, as can be seen from the programme.  Malcolm will be reporting on his conference experience to the RuralGP blog on returning to the UK.

RuralGP welcomes any comments or links with similar organisations in other countries.  If you’re one of our international readers, please get in touch if you wish to share your presentation or comments with the RuralGP blog.

Annual Rural Doctors’ Conference: Autumn 2009

irhlogoThis year’s Rural Health Week – including the Rural Doctors’ Conference – which aims to raise the profile of rural health issues locally, regionally and nationally, will be held from September 27 to October 3.

The theme chosen by the Institute of Rural Health (IRH), which organises the week, is ‘Reaching Out: Enabling access to services for the vulnerable and hard to reach in rural areas’.

“The theme builds on work that we have done on rural stress and rural support and recent rural health research,” said Jane Randall-Smith, IRH chief executive. “It’s about creating different ways to make services more accessible for people who are often at risk of missing out.

“The theme is intended to be all encompassing and we hope everyone with an interest in rural health and wellbeing will get involved. We are looking for examples of innovation across the UK that address these needs.”

The week is designed to bring together people at all levels, from individuals and voluntary organisations to health professionals and local government workers, to celebrate the successes as well as to raise awareness of the challenges involved in delivering health and care services to dispersed rural communities.
