Rural Opportunities in Scotland

NHS Education for Scotland has released a new DVD about opportunities for various healthcare careers within rural areas.  It’s part of the Remote and Rural Healthcare Educational Alliance (RRHEAL), an initiative to improve training and development of healthcare teams across rural Scotland.

The first part of the video focusses on dentistry; there are subsequent interviews with Charlie Siderfin (GP Postgraduate Tutor, Orkney), Chris Williams (GP Trainee, Orkney) and David Sedgwick (Consultant Surgeon, Fort William).  If you can’t see the video below, you might need to visit this page on Vimeo.

Vacancy: Portree, Skye

Portree Medical Centre – Isle of Skye

6 session partner/salaried doctor.

We are looking to recruit a general practitioner to supplement the team of seven partners. Changes in the work patterns of the partners opens an opportunity for an experienced doctor desiring to work in a beautiful rural setting.

We are a busy practice, looking after 5300 patients in the north east of the island including the main town of Portree and the Isle of Rasaay. We are also clinical superintendents for the Portree community hospital (A&E and inpatients).

There is no requirement for OOH work but opportunities are available if desired. High QOF achievers. 3 practice nurses and 9 admin staff. Purpose built surgery. VISION and DOCMAN medical records systems.

Starting date is January 2011.

PhD in Rural Health

The Welsh Government has recently been developing a Rural Health Plan and is in the process of starting the process of implementation. In parallel to this the University of Wales has established a Scholar programme – one of these Scholars will have a responsibility for Rural Health and will be based with the Institute of Rural Health and the University of Swansea.

The Scholar will have a research role and will be involved with the evaluation of a number of the rural health projects established by the plan. Instead of the Rural Scholar being answerable to a commercial company (as stated in the advert), he/she will be answerable to to the Rural Health Plan Implementation Board and the University.

The Scholar will receive a bursary and expenses. He/she will be expected to write up their PhD at the end of the three years.

Harbottle Surgery has served the people of the Upper Rede and Coquet Valleys for at least 100 years. Our team, consisting of a Practice Nurse, Practice Manager, Dispenser and two Receptionists, is dedicated to maintaining a team based approach to patient care.
